INDIA: Designers using khadi for bridal sarees and suits
NEW DELHI: Designers from Bangladesh are using khadi for designing bridal sarees and suits
"In khadi we have designer sarees, short kameez with patiala salwar and churidaars, short and long jackets for women and for men there are shirts, kurtas, flair pants to choose from," said Aneela, a Bangladeshi designer on October 14, who was here for an exhibition with her latest bridal collection.
" The bridal wear is very simple, mattish and sober kind, but is combined with lot of gold and silver jewellery." she says.
Although other fabrics like Rajshahi silk, crapes, shiny silk, raw silk, tangail taant (handwoven sarees with borders) are available in Bangladesh, Aneela prefers to work with khadi, as she says, "I work with 100% handwoven cotton khadi because its eco friendly, something that talks about your own country and very down to earth."
" Khadi is in vogue in Bangladesh and many designers are experimenting with it," she says.
Starting with Rs. 3,000 the prices reach upto 50,000. One can see a combination of the embroidered and the printed stuff on the clothes, "I have tried to strike a balance between the embroided and the printed. One can also see printing poetry in Bangla and French on my clothes and moreover I use the Nakshi Kanta stitch."
"I have used colours like blue, red, white and orange for my collection but with a matty touch. I mix and match with khadi, cotton and silk and dupattas are my speciality with lots of printing and painting on them, " she says.
